Young Single Moms Write & Produce a Play About Their Lives

Step By Step, Inc,  serving young, single, moms ages 14 to 24, proudly presents “Just Us Moms Performing (JUMP)”.

This performance has been ten months in the making.  Ten young, single moms, the youngest an 18 year old mother of 2,  worked with writers Frankie Wolf learning the basic craft of writing poetry and prose, and turning their reflections into literary pieces. They began this process knowing nothing about writing, and will now be published authors.

With help from Hewlett-Packard who provided each mom with a tablet to record her thoughts, a Kentucky Foundation for Women grant, and an Indigogo campaign, the ambitious project fought through work and school schedules, lack of transportation for some of the moms, and fears that what they had to say would not resonate  with the general public.  The result is a performance piece featuring heart, humor, and resilience.

Step By Step, Inc partnered with Girl Project, a local arts and activism organization for young girls, working to increase self esteem.  Founders, Vanessa Becker and Ellie Clark worked with the moms to provide them with stage and acting skills to bring their writing to life.

Throughout the entire process, documentary filmmaker Julie Edwards has recorded everything and will debut a documentary in 2016.
