All Mortimer wants is to find a date to the school dance… which is hard when you’re a zombie. He has a big heart, but when he tries to let it show, his intestines just fall out! What’s an undead guy to do? This sidesplitting yet touching musical is a spooky celebration of the weird in all of us.

REVIEW

Lex Fun 4 Kids writer, Candice, and her family enjoyed a weekend show and have a great review!

“Let’s be weird, let’s be bold, being different with you will never grow old!”

This weekend my family and I had the opportunity to see The Lexington Children’s Theater’s production of Zombies in Love, a musical adapted from the children’s story by Kelly DiPucchio. We’ve been fortunate to see several plays and musicals here, so I was pleasantly surprised when my husband said this was the best musical I’ve taken him to see!

The scene is set at a high school where all of the students are buzzing about the upcoming Cupid Dance. Mortimer, a lonely zombie, gets wrapped up in the excitement and wants to attend the dance with a date. The hilarity ensues as he attempts to take the advice of a classmate on how to woo a girl. From loosing limbs to presenting chocolates filled with bugs and snails, his “woos” are only met with “ewws.”

The musical is narrated by Mortimer’s worms whose vocal talents immediately grab your attention. I was incredibly impressed with the harmonies and all of the vocal performances in this show.

In the song “Outside Looking In” Mortimer shares a duet with Mildred, another zombie who experiences bullying by her old friends she had when she was alive. Their song floats through a vent between separate rooms and a connection is made, though neither realize the other is a zombie.

In a final attempt to get a date, Mortimer writes an advertisement in the paper. In a nod to “If you like Pina Coladas,” Mortimer seeks a date who likes all of the grotesque things that interest him. Mildred sees the ad and decides to meet her mystery man at the dance.

This story is about finding the someone with whom you are able to be yourself. Not everyone will understand you and appreciate you, and sometimes others will make fun of your uniqueness. But there are also those who “never want you to change” and will celebrate the beauty of your weirdness. Accolades to all of the cast and crew for the perfect holiday treat.

This musical runs just over an hour and is set upstairs on the Learning Stage. LCT has an elevator available for those who may find the steps difficult and audience members should be aware that the seating is stadium-like opposed to the main auditrium’s typical chairs.
