United Way 5K on the Runway Set for Saturday, June 27 at Blue Grass Airport

The United Way 5K on the Runway scheduled for Saturday, June 20 at Blue Grass Airport has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 27 due to the threat of inclement weather.  Event hosts and sponsors guard the safety of participants as the most important thing and regret that the race will not be held as planned due to the impending threat of heavy rain, wind and storms. United Way of the Bluegrass thanks members of the community who have registered, volunteered or supported the event through sponsorships.  Your participation is considered a valuable donation to United Way and will go to support a variety of funded programs and services providing critical support to countless individuals across Central Kentucky. 

Participants have been notified of the cancellation by email. Packet pick-up will continue as planned today, through 6:00 PM at the Lexington Herald-Leader. In addition, packets may be picked up ahead of the new race date on Friday, June 26 between 8 AM and 6 PM.

Online registration for 5K on the Runway will remain open until Thursday, June 26 for those who have not yet registered and wish to participate on June 27.

United Way of the Bluegrass and BC Wood Properties have partnered with Blue Grass Airport to host the fourth annual 5K on the Runway.  The race will be held at Blue Grass Airport on Saturday, June 27 at 8:30 AM. Race sponsors and community partners include WTVQ-ABC 36, BodyYou, The Lexington Legends, AirMart, Jack Kain Ford, Clark Materials, Noodles & Company, BB&T, Cup of Commonwealth and Bluegrass Greensource.

All are invited to participate in this year’s race on a chip-timed course allowing the public to run or walk on an actual runway and around Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport. Enjoy the thrill of planes taking off and landing on a neighboring runway as you run or walk to help benefit the Bluegrass community through United Way. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the airport from a unique perspective. “We are excited to once again partner with United Way of the Bluegrass to host a 5K race like no other in Central Kentucky,” said Eric Frankl, Executive Director of Blue Grass Airport.  “It provides runners, walkers and spectators an opportunity to experience the airport in a fun and unique way while enjoying an aviation environment.”

All adult participants will receive a free dry-fit performance shirt, and this year there will be music, food, coffee and a small aircraft display at the finish line, as well as free entertainment for children provided by The Lexington Legends including inflatables and an appearance by Big L.

The cost for adults is $30.00 and online registration will be open through June 18. Children ages 6-14 may register at a discounted rate of $20.00 and will receive a cotton t-shirt with registration; ages 5 and under may register at no cost.

Race packet pick-up and on-site registration will be available on Friday, June 26 at the Lexington Herald-Leader, 100 Midland Avenue, between 8 AM and 6 PM. Strollers are welcome, but please note that pets, bikes, skates or other vehicles are not permitted.  Participants are asked to arrive at the race by 8:00 AM to allow time for parking and check-in. Convenient; free parking will be available onsite.

 

To access the event, participants should enter by the airport’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Training Center on Versailles Road, just West of Keeneland Race Course -4832 Versailles Road. There will be no access through the airport’s main terminal or parking garage. Directions are available on the race website at www.5KontheRunway.com.
