Join us for the official opening of an exciting new exhibition, revealing the surprising story of the Pleasant Hill fossil hunters and their excavation of a prehistoric mammoth.

Kentucky made history in more ways than one when ancient animals were discovered by early paleontologists in the 19th century. The Pleasant Hill Shakers were fascinated by the fossils they unearthed along the Kentucky River Palisades and in their fields. Remarkably, they discovered a large mammoth skeleton in November 1860. Learn about this exciting and surprising story straight from the Shaker journals and see examples of prehistoric fossils found throughout the region.

Earth Day is every day at Shaker Village! Roll up your sleeves with Shaker Village staff to tackle clean-up projects throughout The Preserve. Monarch Waystations are gardens or landscapes that provide resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration, including both spring and summer breeding areas and fall nectaring flowers. Learn how Shaker Village creates healthy habitat for these beautiful pollinators and how you can make one in your own backyard!

 

Be a Spider!

Join us for a family art project! Learn about friendly, though often misunderstood, helpful spiders, then make your own eight legs and big eyes from recycled materials. Afterwards, try out your new spider legs with a parade around The Farm.

Did you know that broomcorn is a variety of sorghum? The Pleasant Hill Shakers grew hundreds of acres of broomcorn to make—you guessed it—brooms. Today, The Farm harvests sorghum each fall for the production of sweet sorghum syrup. Stop by to sample the sorghum and learn how to use it in your own kitchen.

 

5 After 5:00: Seed Saving

The Farm at Shaker Village carries on a long tradition of preserving historic varieties of vegetables and herbs by saving seeds from year to year. Learn how you can save money and grow more nutrient-rich, resilient plants by saving seeds from your own garden. Take home a few varieties of Shaker Village heirloom seeds to start your own

 

$5 After 5:00: Halloween Festivities

October 21 & 22, 5pm-8pm

Bring the kids for a fun and spooky evening trek along the Village road — gathering treats and maybe even a trick or two! Take a hayride and Spirit Stroll, then warm up around the huge bonfire. Enjoy live music, food and drink, kids’ crafts and a selfie costume contest.

 

Be a Bird!

October 22 at 1PM

$10 Ages 13+, $5 ages 6-12 (free for ages 5 and under).

Join us for a family art project! Learn about the diverse birds that call The Preserve home, then try being a bird by making your very own beak and wings from recycled materials. Afterwards, stretch your wings with a parade through the Village.

 

Halloween Boo! Cruise

Make waves at this fun Halloween party on the Kentucky River! Wear your costume and enter the costume contest, hear a scary story, play games, and enjoy light refreshments and festive decorations.

 

Family Tree of Life

Join us for a family art project! Share your family’s story by creating your very own family tree. Draw inspiration from the Shaker Tree of Life and celebrate your heritage.

The Pleasant Hill Shakers were famous for their preserves and “sweetmeats.” Learn an easy and convenient way to make homemade jam with berries, sugar and a resealable bag! Finish with a tasting of your fresh jam on Shaker Village’s famous flatbed crackers.

 

Holiday Greenery Helpers

November 19 + 20, 2pm-4pm

Drop in and help Shaker Village get ready for the holidays! Assemble fresh cut greenery to make festive swags to decorate The Historic Centre. Make one, then take one! Volunteer your time and take a swag home with you as our thanks.

November 19 at 5:30PM

Brrr, it’s cold outside! Make a hanging habitat helper from natural repurposed materials. Hang the natural nesting materials in your backyard and watch your birds, squirrels and chipmunks use them to add warmth to their nests.

 

The Blessing of the Hounds

Time: 9:00 – 10:30 am (Blessing at 10)

Join Shaker Village and the Woodford Hounds fox hunters for this grand, traditional event featuring a blessing of the hounds, riders and the fox, followed by the first meet of the formal hunting season. Warm up with à la carte grilled ham biscuits, Bloody Marys and Irish coffee alongside roaring outdoor fire pits.

 

Illuminated Evenings

During the holiday season, Shaker Village will bustle with light-hearted moments that remind us of long-ago winter days filled with wonder and laughter. Make time to delight in life’s simple gifts with family and friends, as lively music, merriment and candlelight illuminate the Village. In addition to our regular Holiday festivities, Illuminated Evenings will feature holiday music, roaring fires, twinkling lights and special visits with Mrs. Claus! Each Saturday will feature different performers, programs and tours.

Dress your little ones in their holiday finery for an afternoon with Mrs. Claus. Enjoy spiced cider, cookies and sandwiches made for little fingers. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult.
