SUMMARY:MLK\, Jr. Freedom Walk
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration wil
l take place Monday\, Jan. 19\, beginning with the annual Freedom March at
1 p.m. and followed by the commemorative program at 2 p.m. at the Central
  Bank Center.\nThis year’s theme — “The Right to Live\, The Right t
o Choose: Health\, Ballots &amp\; The Beloved Community” — invites th
e Lexington community to reflect on King’s vision through the lens of pu
blic health\, voting rights and the ongoing pursuit of a just and compassi
onate society.\nServing as the 2026 keynote speaker is the Rev. Devon Jero
me Crawford\, senior pastor of Historic Third Baptist Church of San Franci
sco. A theologian and scholar\, Crawford previously served as the inaugur
al national executive director of the Multifaith Initiative to End Mass In
carceration\, a national effort founded by U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock and b

d Kennedy School.\nCrawford’s career spans faith leadership\, public pol
icy and grassroots organizing — from advising cities and governors on eq
uitable public safety and COVID-19 responses to engaging communities in no
nviolent activism and voter mobilization. A Birmingham\, Alabama\, native
and Morehouse College honors graduate\, Crawford is known for his interdi
sciplinary approach to civil rights\, moral leadership and the work of bu

a photo exhibition titled “Witness to History: The Photography of Monet
a Sleet\, Jr.\,” made available to the celebration by Owensboro\, Kentuc
ky-based group\, Through Sleet’s Eyes Festival. The Alpha Beta Lambda Ch

 \n\nSleet\, a native of Owensboro\, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograp

ainment and culture\, this exhibit highlights Sleet’s legendary career
as a photojournalist and “witness to history.”\n\nThe exhibit will be
at Central Bank Center during the 2026 MLK Holiday Commemorative Program
and will be moved to the Lyric Theater and Cultural Arts Center for exhibi
tion from Jan. 20-30.\n\nThe Lexington MLK Holiday Observance is one of t
he longest-running programs of its kind in the nation. Founded in 1973\, 1
3 years before the federal holiday\, the celebration brings thousands from
across Central Kentucky together each year in remembrance and reflection.
The annual Freedom March and program honor King’s legacy of justice\, p
eace and equal opportunity for all Americans and serve as a call to contin
ue the work of advancing human dignity and civil rights.\nThe MLK Holiday
Observance is free and open to the public. Community members can learn mor
e or support the celebration at the MLK Day committee website.\n\n\n\n\n\
 n\nAs the state’s flagship\, land-grant institution\, the University of
Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the n
ext generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything
we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education\, re
search and creative work\, service and health care. We pride ourselves on
being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing\, a place wher
e ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries\
 , disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs\, a $476
.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical
 center\, all on one campus.\n\n
