SUMMARY:Kentucky Geoscience Open House
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday October 28\, 2025\, 6-7:30 p.m.\, the Kentucky
Geological Survey (KGS) will host its 25th annual Open House\, invitin
 g students\, families\, teachers\, and earth-science enthusiasts to explor
e the many wonders of Kentucky’s geology. This long-running tradition of
fers a hands-on\, engaging experience with the natural forces and material
 s that shape Kentucky.\nWhat to Expect\n\n Time &amp\; Location \nThe e
vent runs from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in and around the Mining and Mineral Res
ources Building on the University of Kentucky campus (310 Columbia Avenue
 \, Lexington\, Kentucky 40506). \n\n\n Free\, Open to All \nThe open ho
use is free and open to the public. K-12 students\, parents\, teachers\, a
nd anyone with a curiosity about earth science are encouraged to attend.
 \n\n\n Interactive Demonstrations &amp\; Exhibits \nDisplays and hands-o
 n activities will include: \n\n\n \n\n A volcano demonstration\, whe
re a simulated eruption captures the drama of volcanic processes. \n\n\n\
 n\n \n\n A stream table\, showing sediment transport\, erosion\, and de
position in action. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n A sandbox topography display (aug
mented reality sandbox) that lets visitors mold landforms and “see” ho
w water would flow over and around them.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n An earthq
uake display or simulation\, giving a window into seismic processes. \n\n
 \n\n\n \n\n Collections of rocks\, minerals\, fossils\, and meteorites\
, including specimens from Kentucky and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n Display
 s on geologic hazards (e.g. landslides\, floods)\, radon\, karst feat
ures\, and other geoscience topics. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n Use of specialized
instruments such as scanning electron microscopes to explore rock textur
es and microstructures. \n\n\n\n\n Collaborating Departments &amp\; Grou
ps \nThe open house is organized by KGS in partnership with UK’s Earth
 and Environmental Sciences\, UK’s Mining Engineering\, UK Nursing\, th
e Kentucky Paleontological Society\, the Blue Grass Gem and Mineral Club
\, and other campus and community organizations.  \n\n\n Public Engage
ment &amp\; Education Mission \nThe objective is to raise awareness of
geoscientific processes and natural resources\, to foster public appreciat
ion for earth sciences\, and to connect the community with researchers and
educators.\n\nNew This Year\nSince this year’s Open House is so close t
o Halloween\, KGS is adding a couple of fun\, themed activities. Attendees
may compete in two costume contests: “dress like a geologist” or
“dress like your favorite fossil.” Attendees may also answer three geo
science trivia questions for a chance to win a prize. \nWhy It Matters\nK
entucky has a rich and complex geology — from fossil-bearing formations
to karst systems to mineral resources. Events like the KGS Open House help
bridge the gap between research scientists and the public\, making concep
ts such as erosion\, water movement\, earthquake activity\, and landsl
ides accessible and relevant.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nMoreover\, by offering intera
ctive learning experiences\, the open house can spark student interest in
STEM fields\, support teachers with hands-on materials\, and contribute to
an informed public that better understands environmental challenges and g
eologic risk (e.g. radon\, landslides). Past events have drawn crowds of
 families\, curious students\, and professionals alike.\nLooking Ahead &amp
\; Tips for Attendees \n\n Parking \nCampus parking is open for the eve
nt. Attendees may park at the Parking Structure #2 (301 Hilltop Avenue)\,
Boone Center lot (320 Columbia Avenue)\, Columbia Avenue West lot (420
Columbia Avenue)\, and Columbia Avenue East lot (440 Columbia Avenue). \
